Students didn't have music today (no sub) so we decorated shoe boxes for the Earth Day recycling drive next week. We talked about Earth Day and ways to care for the Earth, which we will talk about in more depth tomorrow. I plan to read The Lorax a personal favorite of mine and have students write a promise about one way they can and will take care of the Earth. Remember to bring in your old batteries next week. I know we have a large container at home that I am excited to finally get rid of in an environmentally conscious way.
Today in math, we worked on looking for language clues in story problems. For example, all together (addition) and how many more (subtraction). We realized that sometimes the writing tries to confuse us and get us to do the wrong thing. One of my students even wrote his own story problem during writer's workshop when he was writing about all of the animals at his house.
Here is a link to what I meant by flexible seating in my last blog post. My students rarely are all in their seats at the same time. They sit in various spots (of choice) during Daily 5 and Daily Math. And, although I assign spots during writer's workshop, I have them spread around the room. http://pin.it/zsPpL9C
