I seriously cannot believe that this year is almost over. With just six weeks left, we still have a lot to do and learn! In reading we have been working on retelling a story by using pictures. Retelling a story helps the reader recall what is happening in the story they are reading. It allows the reader to stop and monitor their understanding. A retelling usually includes characters, settings, problems, and the solution of the main ideas of the text. It also involves telling what is important without telling too much. What I often see students do is retell every single detail from a story or they give a vague description that is hard to follow. Here are some strategies to help your reader at home:
In math, students have been working with money combinations to make 30 cents. We reviewed penny, nickel, dime, and ways to make 30. We also have been practicing exchanging pennies for nickels and dimes.
In writing, we finished up our Spring Narrative unit last week. Students used an editing checklist to work on making sure that they are putting spaces between their words, using correct upper and lower case letters, spelling word wall words correctly and stretching out their words.
